Enzo Camacho & Ami Lien
Amy Lien b. 1987, USA., Enzo Camacho b. 1985, Philippines; live and work in New York, USA and Berlin, Germany.
Enzo Camacho & Ami Lien have a collaborative artistic practice that incorporates diverse media such as sculpture, installation and moving image works. As a point of departure, the Philippines context provides a base to consider types of labour practices under capitalist structures and their intersectional relation to post-colonial damage and trauma. From here, they are able to speak to other global situations in the localised and international sense. Since 2018, the artists have been doing immersive research in Negros. Their work subsequently involves embedding themselves in a local community, to understand particular tensions and frictions, symptomatic of exploitative practices and social relations under capitalist domination and the relentless profit motif that frequently comes at the expense of human compassion. The artworks that arrive out of this embodied and experiential research are experimental in form and employ modest materials. Film works might be accompanied by found materials and detritus, particularly from the ground and the plantation environment, which will be used in the installation of the work. Camacho and Lien’s more recent works are intensely interested in the flattening of figure and ground and the ephemerality of life. (De)Composition is both figurative and literal which can be seen in their handmade paperworks, their use of paper pulp, and phytograms that draw on this relationship specifically to allude to the body and the conditions it finds itself living under.
