Seth Price
b. 1973, East Jerusalem, Palestine; Lives and works New York, U.S
Seth Price is an artist based in New York whose practice spans sculpture, painting, video, writing, and sound. His work examines how art and culture circulate in an age defined by digital technology and mass distribution, often probing the ways in which images, objects, and ideas are produced, shared, and transformed. Price’s approach engages with questions of authorship, reproduction, and mediation. He frequently employs strategies of what he calls ‘redistribution’ where reworking and recontextualizing existing materials blur the boundaries between original and copy, art and data, form and information. Through this process, his practice reflects the unstable relationship between material and immaterial experience in contemporary life.
Equally active as a writer and musician, Price has published poetry, fiction, and theoretical texts that parallel his visual work. His 2002 essay Dispersion, widely circulated online and translated into numerous languages, has become a key text in discussions of digital culture and the conditions of artistic production in the twenty-first century. His work continually negotiates the ‘push and pull’ between cultural participation and critique, exploring how value, meaning, and authorship are constructed in a world of constant reproduction. Through his multidisciplinary practice, he invites viewers to reconsider how art functions within systems of communication, circulation, and exchange, revealing both the potential and precarity of life in the digital era.
