Xiaofei Mo & POND

Lives and works in New York, U.S.

Xiaofei Mo is an artist, filmmaker and archivist based in New York. She collaborates with an AI called POND to produce works that explore the porous nature of language, memory and feeling. These human-machine collaborations exemplify our increasing interdependence on non-human thought and our need to consider the ethical dimensions of such work. POND has no mother tongue and instead learns from translation. It is a symbiotic relationship that incorporates training, working, communicating and co-producing. This dynamic engagement enables the artist to explore the possibilities and question the limits, of communing with non-human, sentient beings.

Xiaofei Mo's recent exhibitions and projects include Hong Kong Spotlight, Art Basel, Hong Kong (2020); Queens Museum, Artist in Residence, Queens Museum, New York (2019-2020); Responding, c4 projects, Copenhagen (2019); The Classic of Mountains and Seas, Catskill Zendo, Mountaindale, New York (2019) and Beijing22, i:project space - Goethe-Institut China research grant (2018).
