Yang Dingliu
b. 1992, Leshan, Sichuan, China; lives and works in Dusseldorf, Germany
Yang Dingliu is a video artist whose practice centres on the subtle interplay between perception, memory, and endurance. Working primarily with moving image, she adopts a restrained, observational approach to explore the human experience at both physical and psychological thresholds. Her works often occupy a space between documentary and poetic reflection, using carefully composed imagery to illuminate what is usually unseen or unspoken. Drawing from lived experiences and recalled environments, Yang constructs visual narratives that examine the limits of bodily strength and the inner dimensions of consciousness. Her ongoing series Main Switch focuses on the world of freediving, using the sport as a lens through which to explore solitude, discipline, and transformation. Works such as Alchemy present the diver as both subject and metaphor, as an individual navigating the tension between control and surrender, presence and absence. Yang’s art often gestures toward spiritual and philosophical themes, reflected in titles referencing Eastern thought, including Samādhi and Sumeru. Rather than overt explanation, her practice invites a contemplative gaze, encouraging viewers to look deeper, to attune to the ephemeral, and to consider the invisible forces shaping the human condition.
