Yu Ji

b. 1985, Shanghai, China.

Yu Ji has developed a diverse practice that incorporates sculptures and installations along with performances and videos. Recent works include live performances accompanied by sculptures that function to meticulously conceived scenes that explore the place of the body, labour and physical exertion. Much of her work is motivated by the investigation of the concept of place, and the capacity for specific loci to be charged with geographical and historical narratives. She frequently conducts field research, as part of which she has staged temporary interventions in different sites around the world, which reflect upon and interrogate the place of the body within everyday environments. With such divergent creative directions, Yu Ji’s art practice presents a multifarious quality, demonstrating myriad thoughts on tradition, the environment, self-being and art through the deconstruction and reconstruction of the classical contexts of sculpture. In 2008, she co-founded am art space – an artist-led space in Shanghai, promoting experimentation and exchanges between artists, curators, and the public.
