Corinne de San Jose, 14 Stations, 2025

14 Stations by Corinne de San Jose is a sound-based installation that explores transmission, presence, and perception through the quiet resonance of the sea. The work consists of 14 individual radio transmitters, each broadcasting a unique audio loop of oceanic soundscapes. We hear waves breaking on a shoreline, distant tides, the ambient hush of the sea. Displayed on the transmitters themselves is the frequency where each audio recording appears on the radio-waves and it is possible to tune into these frequencies using FM radios, discovering each station by scanning through the airwaves. This enables 14 possible chance encounters outside of the context of an exhibition or display by occupying unused frequencies. This subtly references pirate radio culture and the idea of reclaiming sonic space, yet a quiet inversion takes place. Music and rational sound are conventionally characterised as signal among noise, whereas here, Corinne de San Jose finds a world saturated with information—news, music, opinion— as the noise. She imagines the intrusion of these seascapes as an unexpected signal amid the chaos. Finding by chance the noise of the sea becomes a moment of quiet clarity and sense. The simple act of stumbling upon the sound of the ocean amidst static and chatter becomes a form of quiet resistance or even spiritual encounter and a form of ‘evangelization’ through serenity rather than message.

Beyond the poetic audio content, 14 Stations reflects on the invisible infrastructure of communication. Radio waves, though intangible, constantly pass through us. The piece draws attention to this unseen presence. It considers how sound is encoded, transmitted, and received and invites reflection on how we engage with these ephemeral forces. In this work, sound is not merely material but the central conceptual framework. By centring the immaterial and the intimate, 14 Stations encourages a re-tuning of perception. It is an invitation to listen deeply and find stillness in the spaces between noise.
