Zhang Xu Zhan, Termite Feeding Show, 2024

In Zhang Xu Zhan’s Termite Feeding Show, traditional paper puppetry stop-motion animation and live action blend together, offering a surreal depiction of a current topical news story in Taiwan. It has been reported that ecological shifts have caused termites to chew power cables as a source of food, causing major blackouts in mountainous cities in Taiwan. Across a dual screen installation, Termite Feeding Show imagines an alternate reality and life of the termites, where an experience economy has developed around the fine dining consumption of man-made power lines. On one screen, a blend of live action and stop-frame animation reveals termite pianists serenading termite diners. We see an anthropomorphised power cable being prepared and cooked for the guests as an interactive spectacle. The process is complex and skilful, with culinary prowess on display, each aspect of the task highly ritualised. Every part of the cable is extracted for consumption, each plate sophisticated in its presentation and cooking. On the other screen we see a termite’s point of view in what appears to be an ingredient gathering exercise. A small team of termites gather together, find and carry sections of cable in their subterranean environment. Although more chaotic and loose in approach, the exercise is rich in its own attendant rituals and ceremonies. In each video we see the codified behaviours of a particular industry. The public facing etiquettes and grandeur of the ‘dining’ experience, and the noble labour of the ‘farmer’. Combined, Zhang Xu Zhan’s Termite Feeding Show offers a humorous illustration of an ecological shift caused by climate change. It is while laughing at the recognisable tropes of human industry that we are reminded at what cost certain luxuries are afforded to us. The demands made by humans of the earth come at an ecological price, and this inversion of the human-centric perspective offers a deeply satirical portrayal of excess and desire.
