Chan Hau Chun

b. 1981, China; Lives and works Hong Kong.

Chan Hau Chun is a filmmaker and visual artist whose work explores the emotional landscapes of marginal lives, memory, and the meaning of place. Often using documentary and experimental cinematic forms, her practice is grounded in quiet observation and intimate storytelling, drawing from personal history, urban transformation, and the lives of people on the periphery of mainstream attention. Growing up separated from her parents, Chan developed a deep curiosity about family relationships and belonging, and these are central themes that echo throughout her films and photography, particularly what is meant by ‘home’. Her practice, across film, video and photography, while tackling specific subjects, shares a commitment to nuanced portrayals of overlooked communities. Whether filming cramped apartments or speaking with homeless residents under bridges, Chan constructs layered, empathetic portraits of Hong Kong’s complex realities. Across media, her work maps the delicate interplay between individual agency, collective memory, and the shifting urban environment. While not often explicit, these renderings of life become a story from below, from the ground, and the implications of the political climate are never far beneath the surface.
