Jiang Zhi
b. 1971, Hunan province, China; lives and works Beijing
Jiang Zhi is an artist whose multifaceted practice at an intersection of personal emotion, social reality, and poetic reflection. Working fluidly across photography, painting, video, and installation, Jiang crafts visual narratives that move between the intimate and the collective, the lyrical and the analytical. His works are deeply rooted in lived experience, whether private memories, shifting relationships, or the complexities of contemporary Chinese society, they become recurring threads in his artistic language.
Trained in painting, Jiang first came to prominence through his innovative photographic works, which revealed his sensitivity to both form and feeling. Over time, his practice has expanded to embrace a wide range of materials and methods, each employed to question how images shape, distort, and reflect reality. By merging the rigor of conceptual inquiry with the emotional charge of poetry, Jiang positions himself at a crossroads between sociology and aesthetics. His images often inhabit an ambiguous space between the real and the imagined: flowers ignite yet remain impossibly pristine; domestic scenes dissolve into dreamlike distortions. Through such quiet acts of transformation, Jiang invites viewers to reconsider the fragility of perception and the hidden tensions beneath ordinary life.
