Zhang Xu Zhan

b. 1988, Taipei, Taiwan; lives and works Taipei, Taiwan

Zhang Xu Zhan is an artist and film director who often makes paper-mâché sculpture that he then animates in stop-motion films. Working with different scales and subjects - from luxury mansions and oversized paper dolls to intricate depictions of mythological animals and flowers, his work can be characterised by an interest in the absurd and the use of bizarre, uncanny imagery. Often referencing East Asian mythology and fairytales, Zhang Xu Zhan uses these fables and folklores as a vehicle to offer wry observations on strange social phenomena and more contemporary topical stories. He employs an experimental approach where stop-frame animation is often combined with live action with the resultant works appearing as multi-channel film installations.
