Nicole-Antonia Spagnola is a multimedia artist whose practice examines the circulation of cultural forms across music, film, literature and visual art. Working primarily with moving image, sculpture, found objects and appropriated media, she draws on the histories of subcultural production to consider how cultural meaning and value are constructed, preserved and transformed. Her work frequently engages with the aesthetics of computational media and the underground music cultures of the 1980s, particularly Italian hardcore, relocating these references into new configurations that blur distinctions between archive, artefact and contemporary artwork. Music is integral to Spagnola’s practice, both as a subject and a mode of experimentation. Across her practice, familiar cultural materials are displaced and recombined, creating new systems of association that question established hierarchies of taste, authenticity, authorship and exchange.
