Angela Su, The Magnificent Levitation Act of Lauren O, 2022
The Magnificent Levitation Act of Lauren O is a pseudo-documentary that tells the story of Lauren O, a fictional character who believes she can levitate. The film narrates her involvement with Laden Raven, an activist group catalysed by the US anti-war movement of the 1960s, alongside found footage of historic events and political contexts loosely associated with flight, suspension, and levitation as well as clips of the artist engaged in an ‘aerial silk’. The work suggests a counter-history and offers a multitude of alternative spaces for action and disruption, either as internalized by power or as counter-hegemonic positions. In this way, Angela Su conveys a speculative narrative through interlocking fictional perspectives, and the act of levitation serves as an organising metaphor to explore myriad cultural and political instances of resistance. The work serves to highlight the act of actually transcending daily oppressions and political obstacles.
